Rosa Parks (1913–2005) was an American civil rights activist whose refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955 became an iconic act of resistance. Her arrest sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a pivotal moment in the American civil rights movement. She was later awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
