John Davison Rockefeller Sr. (1839–1937) was an American business magnate and philanthropist who founded the Standard Oil Company in 1870, which dominated the U.S. oil industry. He became the world's first billionaire and is widely considered the wealthiest American of all time when adjusted for inflation. Later in life, he gave away nearly half his fortune, founding institutions such as the University of Chicago and the Rockefeller Foundation.
